Oxer Wines Kalamity 2024

Oxer Wines is the winery of Oxer Bastegieta who, after working for years in the family business in Kortezubi producing Txakoli, moved to Rioja and founded his own business in Laguardia. Produced in limited quantities, Kalamity is a red wine made from a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Viura, and Garnacha Blanca, coming from two vineyards located between 580 and 600 meters above sea level, one in Rioja Alta, planted in 1903, on land clay rich in iron, and the other in Rioja Alavesa, with centenary vines, planted on clay-limestone soil. After the harvest, the grapes are vinified separately with indigenous yeasts and aged for 12 months in French oak barrels before blending. The name and label of the wine are inspired by Shakespeare. The wine has a brilliant ruby red color and a complex and fragrant aromatic profile with notes of ripe berries and floral aromas, followed by herbaceous and spicy hints. On the palate, it is elegant, young, and lively but well-balanced. It has a strong mineral streak and a well-balanced acidity. The finish is long and recalls fruity notes. It is ready to drink now paired with roast pork or lamb, but it can also stay in the cellar for a while and evolve beautifully.
