Previously known for supplying the Soviet Union with affordable everyday wines in enormous quantities, Moldova is once again making a name for itself thanks to the revival of wineries like Chateau Purcari. Purcari is the countrys oldest winery thanks to a special decree recognising its status which was issued by Tsar Nicholas I in 1827. Conditions here are ideal for premium winemaking thanks to a similar terroir to that found in Bordeaux. In fact the famous French wine region sits on the same latitude and has the same rubidium-rich soils as those found in this south-eastern corner of Moldova. Nearby is the Black Sea which has a cooling effect on the surrounding area, helping to preserve plenty of acidity and freshness in the local wines. This elegant ros is composed of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes, the same varieties used to make Champagne, which are harvested by hand to ensure they arrive at the winery in perfect condition. The fruit is vinified according to traditional winemaking techniques and then matured for an extended period to add complexity and a silky smooth texture. Bursting with ripe red berries, sweet mint and hints of lemon zest and dried herbs, this makes a stunning aperitif or partner for seafood, fish or salads.
